2017 Summer Research Lab Reception
Faculty, staff, students, and Summer Research Lab (SRL) participants celebrated the start of this year’s SRL with a reception at the University YMCA on June 21. Food from the Russian, East European, and Eurasian region was served. Joe Lenkart, Manager of the Slavic Reference Service (SRS), gave his remarks. Everyone had a great time catching up with colleagues, meeting visiting researchers, and enjoying the refreshments.

Spring Reception 2017
REEEC celebrated the end of the academic year with a Spring Reception on May 4th. Skalnik Prize winners, FLAS fellows for both the summer and 2017-2018 academic year, graduating students, and REEEC’s dedicated graduate student workers were announced and lauded. REEEC faculty, students, and staff thanked Director David Cooper for a wonderful 5 years of service. In appreciation, we recalled some of the most memorable moments of the last 5 years. We wish him all the best as he returns to the Slavic Department full-time. REEEC wishes everyone a terrific summer! See you in the fall!
REEEC Winter Reception 2016
On December 7, 2016, REEEC held its annual Winter Reception in Illini Rooms A & B of the Illini Union. Faculty, staff, students, and guests enjoyed tasty refreshments and Ukrainian holiday music. It was a festive closure to an eventful Fall semester! REEEC would like to wish Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all!
2016 Summer Research Laboratory Reception and Slavic Reference Service 40th Anniversary Celebration
Faculty, staff, students, and Summer Research Lab (SRL) participants celebrated the beginning of SRL and the 40th anniversary of the Slavic Reference Service (SRS) with a reception at the University YMCA on June 21, 2016. Attendees enjoyed food from the Russian, East European, and Eurasian region prepared by Piato Cafe. Speakers from the University Library and REEEC reminisced on the origins of SRL and SRS, including Larry Miller’s and Ralph Fisher’s tireless efforts to build the programs, and praised the good work both organizations continue to do to promote research and studies on the region. Everyone had a wonderful time with friends and colleagues!
Spring Reception 2016
REEEC celebrated the end of the academic year with its annual Spring Reception on Friday, May 13. Students, faculty, staff, and guests enjoyed refreshments provided by Pekara Bakery. During the reception, student award winners and graduating students were recognized. Matthew Klopfenstein (Ph.D. student in History) was named the winner of the 2016 Yaro Skalnik Prize for his essay entitled “Modernity and the Task of Ozdorovlenie: Russian Doctors and the Discourse of Social Hygiene.” Summer 2016 FLAS fellows were announced (please see here for the list of fellows). Graduating REEEC M.A. students Bethany Wages and Emily Lipira, and graduating undergraduate students Gabriella Repala (REEEC) and Medina Spiodic (Economics with a REEEC minor) were also recognized for their achievements in REEE studies. The REEEC staff wishes everyone a wonderful summer! We hope to see you all again in the fall!
Associate Director Alisha Kirchoff’s Farewell Event
On Monday, July 13, members of the REEEC community gathered at The Bread Company to wish Associate Director Alisha Kirchoff well as she leaves Champaign-Urbana to begin her doctoral studies in sociology at Indiana University this fall. Students, faculty, and staff shared memories of Alisha’s five remarkable years at REEEC. David Cooper, Director of REEEC, led a roast in honor of her achievements and in remembrance of fun moments at the Center. Along with Prof. Cooper, Joe Lenkart (SRS Manager), Richard Tempest (Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and former Director of REEEC), Michael Finke (Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures), and Cynthia Buckley (Professor of Sociology) also participated in the roast. Alisha will be missed, but we wish her and her family all the best!
2015 Summer Research Laboratory Reception
Faculty, graduate student, and staff affiliates of REEEC gathered at the University YMCA on June 19, 2015, to welcome the 2015 Summer Research Laboratory (SRL) participants, and honor the legacy of REEEC and SRL founder Ralph Fisher. Organized by the Slavic Reference Service (SRS) and REEEC, the event highlighted the beginning of SRL. John Wilkin, Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, was in attendance and gave his remarks. Everyone enjoyed eating the delicious food from the Russian, East European, and Eurasian region and socializing with colleagues.

REEEC celebrated a successful 2014-2015 academic year with a spring reception on Friday, May 15.
